Studying abroad for Singapore students, have you ever considered it as a Junior college or Polytechnic student?
Probably not I suspect, as you commit to the intense competition for limited spots in local universities.
With hard caps on admission rates, the mad rush for grades begins, and exams become increasingly challenging as scores keep getting better.

This vicious cycle can stifle creativity and individuality. Whilst adding more stress and anxiety.

Why consider studying abroad? The Homogenous Local Education System
Most MOE teachers in Singapore graduate from local universities, replicating the same teaching style in their classrooms.
This results in a homogenous education system where students think and behave alike.
When local graduates enter the job market, employers become choosy, since so many have the same qualifications and experiences. It easy to get overlooked.
Conversely, studying abroad means you have exposure to a very different culture, way of communicating as well as social behaviors and nuances.
Bring these rich experiences back to Singapore when you return from studying abroad will provide a unique differentiating factor at the interview stage and beyond.

Studying abroad: Developing Character and Soft Skills
Studying abroad is a transformative experience that awakens your senses to a new world.
Whilst studying abroad, it will force you to adapt and develop essential soft skills.
This is because you are sticking out like a sore thumb and have to become more sensitive to others in order to blend in when studying abroad. Blending in with the others is like a safety mechanism. Especially so if you do not want to fall prey to criminals or other shady persons.

It may sound scary but this is because Singapore is way safer than other countries. Whilst that sounds great, it also creates gullible people who are very unaware and socially awkward outside of Singapore.
By studying abroad, you also learn how to live independently. Managing your schedule and keep abreast with your duties as a foreign student, a child to your family and your friends back home. Learning how to cope with limited resources, not losing sight of eventually gaining the degree etc.
It is not usual for the local student to rely on the family or maid to have breakfast on the table, have an entire day planned out by the parents without having to lift a finger to do chores or worry about finances.

Debunking the Cost Myth of studying abroad
Many assume studying abroad is prohibitively expensive.
However, numerous overseas universities offer scholarships to attract foreign students, valuing Singapore’s academic reputation. For e.g. UK offer the commonwealth scholarship to Singapore students.
There are also several government scholarships that cover overseas courses. Though these are usually awarded to the best such as the President’s scholarship.
A tip for you, why not seek out an internship with a local company do your best then ask for a scholarship. Negotiate your terms such as covering tuition, living expenses, and even monthly allowances in return for a bond to the company.
If the company sees that you are worth the investment, and they can guarantee a proven employee they can tie down, why not?!

Otherwise, many countries allow their overseas students to work part time as well. This way, you can offset some of the costs.
And perhaps it may even parlay into a full time position after you complete your studies giving you a leg into the a country that may not be as easy if you are starting from Singapore.

Unlocking Global Career Opportunities after studying abroad
Singapore’s small market makes it extremely vulnerable to economic fluctuations.
Studying abroad provides access to international career opportunities, buffering against economic downturns.
Many students choose to stay overseas after graduation, leveraging their new network and skills.
This is especially if developing in an area of expertise/specialty that Singapore lacks.
For example electric vehicle manufacturing technologies, agricultural technology and optimization or nuclear power generation etc.

Real-Life Success Stories
Take, for instance, the story of Ernest, one of my past students now a medical graduate of University of Cardiff.
He secured a training position in a London hospital towards a general practitioner, enjoying a decent salary and rejecting the training grant offer by MOH Singapore to come back to Singapore to practice.
I hope to include more of his details and real picture when I do catch up with him in time to come!

The Studying Abroad Bottom Line
For Singaporean students, studying abroad offers a game-changing opportunity to gain a competitive edge, unlock global career prospects, and transform their lives.

By choosing overseas universities, you’ll access world-class education, develop invaluable soft skills, and broaden your perspectives.
Don’t miss this chance to stand out from the crowd, enhance your employability, and secure a brighter future.
Studying abroad for Singaporeans is more than just an education – it’s a pathway to success, cultural immersion, and personal growth.
